Before you start
RAVE powervalve
- Read the UK law page before you fit a blade.
- Soak a stuck valve. Do not force it.
- Use 12 volts only after you know the coil pins.

Guide 05 · Two-stroke
Blade orientation, cleaning, a 12 volt solenoid test, cable adjustment, and the difference between a blade and a restrictor blanking plate.
Before you start
How many steps: 8
Step 1 of 8
Look for a blanking plate or a blade.
Read the UK law page before you fit a blade.
Which codes left the factory with a plate is To verify. MPA0, MPA1, MPB1 and PYA are restricted codes the brief names in these years. UK bikes were often sold at 15 bhp. A full-power two-stroke is around 21–23 kW and is not an A1 bike.
Step 2 of 8
If the law allows it, fit the blade.
The brief says taper down, flat side up. Confirm that in the manual before you lock the cover. To verify.
Step 3 of 8
Lift the blade out. Soak it if it sticks.
Do not force a stuck blade. It bends.
Carbon under the blade is the usual reason it sticks. The bee-tail is where a sticking valve and a seized solenoid are named.
Step 4 of 8
Keep solvent off the solenoid.
Seal compatibility is To verify.
Step 5 of 8
Find the coil pins before you use 12 volts.
Do not probe a multi-pin plug at random.
The pinout is To verify. Do not probe a multi-pin connector at random.
Step 6 of 8
Use a fused 12 volt supply.
Do not spark it across a battery. A click and a blade that travels is the practical pass. The current it should draw is To verify. A solenoid that only buzzes is not a pass.
Step 7 of 8
Lubricate the cable and set the free play.
You'll need: The manual's free-play figure.
A valve held open can seize a cold engine.
Free play is 0.5 mm. Warm to 60°C before hard use. That temperature is from MCN.
Step 8 of 8
Turn the engine by hand and move the valve.
Do not start it if the valve may hit the piston.
The clearance that proves it misses the crown is To verify. Fit a seal that matches the year.

The RAVE valve is how these engines make their mid-range, and it is also how a restricted bike is often made restricted. Read the UK law page before you swap a blanking plate for a blade. A full-power two-stroke is around 21–23 kW in the brief. That is not an A1 motorcycle and it is not a provisional-licence motorcycle.
A restricted bike may have a blanking plate where the blade should be. The Extrema / GS, per Hartrusion in the brief, had no factory-restricted version, so a plate on one of those has been added. Later codes in this record are explicit: MPA0 at 11 kW, MPA1 at 5 kW, MPB1 at 11 kW, PYA at 11 kW. UK bikes were also often sold at 15 bhp. Which of those used a plate, a stop, or only a CDI change is To verify on the bike. Look. Do not assume.
If the law allows the blade, the brief’s derestriction steps say it goes in taper down, flat side up. That orientation is sourced from those steps. Confirm it against the manual for your year before you lock the cover down, because a step repeated from a blog is not a drawing. The confirmation is the remaining To verify.
Carbon under the blade is the usual reason a valve sticks. The bee-tail is the generation where the brief names a sticking powervalve and a seized solenoid. Take the cover off with the photos beside you. Lift the blade out in the direction it is free to move. If it will not move, soak it. Forcing it bends the blade, and a bent blade jams worse on the way back in.
Keep solvent off the solenoid if you can remove the valve without soaking the electrics. Seal compatibility is To verify.
The brief includes a test on 12 volts. Identify the two pins that are the coil before you apply anything. The pinout is To verify. Do not probe a multi-pin connector at random.
Use a fused 12 volt supply, not a spark across a battery. A working solenoid moves or clicks. A silent one that draws no current is open-circuit. A silent one that gets hot may be seized rather than electrical. The current it should draw is To verify. If you do not have that figure, a click and a blade that travels is the practical pass, and a solenoid that only buzzes is not.
The control unit on these bikes is the RAVE controller. Do not transplant a controller from a different year until the manual for this bike says it is the same part. The pinout is To verify.
The cable pulls the valve through its travel. Frayed inners and dry outers stick in a way that feels like a weak solenoid. Lubricate the cable, set the free play to 0.5 mm, and confirm the blade can close. A cable adjusted so the valve is held open will rev as if it has been derestricted, and it can seize a cold engine. The warm-up to 60°C from MCN still applies.
Put the cover back with a seal that matches the year. Then turn the engine by hand and operate the valve. It must not hit the piston crown. The clearance that proves that is To verify. If you cannot find it, do not start the engine on a valve you have reassembled from guesswork.
