MOT, registration and import

MOT prep without invented test limits, then NOVA, the 10-year type-approval exemption, and the V55/5 for an Italian import.

Updated 25 October 2026

Before you start

MOT, registration and import

  • A UK V5C means MOT and tax.
  • No V5C, and the bike came from Italy: NOVA, then a V55/5.
  • Wear limits stay in the DVSA manual. They are not copied here.

How many steps: 6

Tools

  • The current motorcycle MOT inspection manual from DVSA. Limits change and are not copied here.
  • A notebook of the defects from guide 1
  • The Italian registration document, if the bike is still on Italian plates
  • Proof of the date of manufacture or first registration
  • Photo ID, insurance, and an MOT certificate if the application needs one
  • The V55/5 from DVLA, current edition
  • A pen that writes on the form they actually issued, not a photocopy of an old one

Parts

  • Bulbs, pads and tyres from the specs pages. DVSA pass and fail limits are still in the current inspection manual.
  • A number-plate set only after DVLA has issued the mark. Do not guess a plate.
  • No type-approval kit for a bike over 10 years old. The brief says those are exempt.

Slots for these parts, with empty OEM numbers and empty prices, are in theparts directory.

This is the paperwork guide, and the pre-MOT workshop list that sits in front of it. A bike that already has a UK V5C is an ordinary UK motorcycle: MOT and tax. An Italian bike that is not yet registered here is the NOVA and V55/5 path. Confirm which paperwork you actually hold before you follow the import steps. To verify on the documents, not on the paint.

MOT prep

An MOT is a test against the current inspection manual. On 25 October 2026 the DVSA motorcycle manual required at least 1.0 mm of tread across three-quarters of the breadth, and it listed a brake lining below 1.0 mm as a dangerous defect. Haynes 4298 still uses 1.5 mm of friction material as a workshop minimum. Read the DVSA manual again before the test, because the categories move.

What you can usefully check from the rest of this series, before you pay for a fail:

  • Lights, indicators, horn, brake lamp switches. Old clocks fail on the round-light bikes. A dead dash is not always a dead lamp. Bulb watts are on the electrics specs page: 55/55 W headlight to 1998, then separate 55 W high and low beams.
  • Head bearings and wheel bearings. Notchiness is guide 10.
  • Brake hoses, leaks, and a lever that pumps up. Axial or radial is guide 9. Workshop minimum friction material is 1.5 mm. That is not a DVSA limit.
  • Tyres for cuts and age cracks. Haynes 4298 lists 1993–1998 as front 110/70-17 (ZR) and rear 150/60-17 (ZR). From 1999 it lists more than one size, so the swingarm label decides. The sizes are on the chassis specs page. The legal tread depth is in the DVSA manual.
  • Chain slack 25–35 mm, size 520. That is a workshop figure.
  • The exhaust: secure, and not blowing at a joint. A rotten bee-tail chamber is a named fault. A missing silencer is not a two-stroke personality.
  • The number plate, once you have a UK mark: the spacing and the font are the current rules, which you check on GOV.UK rather than copy from a 1998 Italian plate.
  • The stand, the footpegs, and the lock stops from guide 1.

Book the test when those are honest. A two-stroke that smokes because the oil pump is wrong may also fail a nuisance judgement. Fix the pump first. Hartrusion’s stroke notes are on the cooling guide. The cable setting after the pump has been apart is To verify.

Importing from Italy

The brief’s order is the order to follow.

  1. Tell HMRC, using NOVA, within 14 days of the bike arriving. Pay the VAT or the duty they assess. The window is the sourced figure. The tax due on a particular 1998 motorcycle is not in the brief, because it depends on the bike and the rules on the day. To verify with HMRC, not with a forum total.
  2. Type approval. Bikes over 10 years old are exempt, so there is no MSVA test. A 1998 motorcycle is long past that age. On the V55/5 the brief says to write “exempt” and the reason “over 10 years old”.
  3. Send the V55/5 to DVLA with the original Italian registration document, proof of the date, your ID, insurance, an MOT if one is required for the application, the first-registration fee and the tax. GOV.UK’s fee page, checked 25 October 2026, says £55 by cheque or postal order, not cash. Read it again before you pay. GOV.UK also says the V5C can take up to 6 weeks. Use the form they currently publish.
  4. Wait for the V5C. The UK mark is assigned then. Fit plates after you have the mark, to the current plate rules.

Dating evidence matters when the Italian first registration and the build year are not the same thing. A frame number that starts GS is a GS. The model-year letter in the VIN gives the build year, which is not the same fact as the date someone first registered it. Explain the difference on the form if you have documents for both. Do not pick the date that is more convenient.

After the V5C

Insurance that describes the bike as it is, including any derestriction. The law page has the licence limits. Then the ordinary life of a UK bike: MOT when it is due, and a V5C that matches the frame number. If the frame number on the document and the frame number on the bike disagree, stop using the bike and correct the record. That is a DVLA problem, not a sticker problem.

The community page has a bike-register note you can email in. It is not a substitute for the V5C, and it is not stored on a server unless you later connect a form endpoint.

Common mistakes

  • Missing the 14-day NOVA window.
  • Booking an MSVA test for a bike the VCA route says is exempt because it is over 10 years old.
  • Sending a V55/5 without the Italian document.
  • Sending a fee from memory. GOV.UK listed £55 on 25 October 2026. Read the fee page on the day you pay.
  • Dating the bike from the UK registration if it was imported and registered years after it was built.
